Firmware, Firmware, Firmare... oh and In-game XMB!

Lots of firmware news the past few days.

For the PSP we recently heard that firmware v4.00 will included Google search function from the XMB as well as some much needed video control options. In previous firmware announcements when they states "soon" it usually turned out to be "tonight after midnight Eastern." Well this time around that wasn't the case. I've checked a few times today to really see what's included in the Search option but the update isn't available.

Today we get word that Firmware v2.36 will become available for the PS3 and confirmation that v2.40 will included in-game XMB as well as Trophy support! Of course these are listed as releasing "soon" as well.

So turns out all the rumors were right about v2.40 but the releasing before/with MGS4 appears to be incorrect. Check out the links and the raving reception of confirmed in-game XMB over at the PlayStation.Blog.

PSP (PLAYSTATION Portable) v4.00 Update
Firmware (v2.36) coming soon, (v2.40) to include Trophies, in-game XMB

As soon as both are available I'll drop a line on what I think. Back to watching the Celts blow out the Lakers!

[*EDIT*]
One hour later... PS3 firmware releases and is available for download. While I was downloading the PS3 update the PSP version was also released.

PS3 version just includes some stability updates for Playstation titles, and nothing else mentioned in the release notes.

Now, due to my wireless router being an [explicative deleted] it took forever to download the 25Mb update. Now that it's downloaded it complains that the battery is too low to update. Something I think should really be addressed. I currently have it charging and running of of AC power, so why am I even hearing it say a single word about the battery? I guess I'll come back to this after it charges for an hour.
